La Crosse, Wis. – Dangerous heat is gripping western Wisconsin this weekend, with heat index values expected to climb as high as 105°F in La Crosse and surrounding counties Saturday and Sunday. The extreme conditions could pose serious health risks, especially during the peak afternoon hours.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, temperatures in the 90s combined with high humidity will produce sweltering conditions both days. Gusty southwest winds will offer little relief, and overnight lows in the 70s will keep things uncomfortable after sunset.

Communities including Onalaska, Prairie du Chien, and Viroqua are under heat advisories, with the worst impacts likely from 1 to 7 p.m. each day. Vulnerable populations — including infants, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses — are urged to stay in air conditioning, drink water frequently, and avoid strenuous activity. Authorities stress: never leave people or pets in vehicles, even briefly.

Cooling centers are open across La Crosse County, and residents should check on neighbors and relatives without access to adequate cooling.

Heat advisories remain in effect through Sunday night, and additional alerts may be issued if conditions worsen.
