Green Bay, Wisconsin – A surge of heat and humidity will spread across central and eastern Wisconsin this weekend, bringing dangerous outdoor conditions as heat index values climb into the mid to upper 90s Sunday and Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, temperatures and humidity will increase rapidly beginning Sunday, with the hottest conditions expected across much of central and east-central Wisconsin. Communities including Green Bay, Appleton, Oshkosh, Fond du Lac, Wausau, Stevens Point, Wisconsin Rapids and surrounding areas are expected to experience peak heat index values ranging from the mid-90s to near 100 degrees.
While scattered thunderstorms could provide brief cooling in a few locations, forecasters emphasize that heat stress will be the primary weather hazard both Sunday and Monday. The combination of high temperatures and increasing humidity will make prolonged time outdoors dangerous, especially for those without access to air conditioning or adequate hydration.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water throughout the day, take frequent breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned location and limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon. Check on older adults, young children and anyone without reliable cooling, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
The National Weather Service will continue monitoring the developing heat event, and Heat Advisories may be issued if forecast confidence continues to increase as the weekend approaches.
