Green Bay, WI – Dangerous ice conditions on Green Bay waters are expected today as gusty southwest winds and mild temperatures cause rapid ice deterioration. Residents are strongly urged to avoid venturing onto the ice, as conditions could become hazardous quickly.

According to the National Weather Service, today’s high will reach 40°F, accompanied by winds between 10 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. These conditions increase the risk of ice floe movement and cracking, making it unsafe for activities like fishing, walking, or snowmobiling. Officials recommend avoiding all frozen waterways.

A significant weather shift will follow, with temperatures plunging Saturday night as an Arctic airmass arrives. Saturday’s high is expected to be 16°F under mostly sunny skies, but by Saturday night, the low will drop to -2°F with west-northwest winds up to 24 mph. Sunday will be even colder, with a high near 5°F and a low around -10°F.

The extreme cold will persist into Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with Monday’s high near 0°F and an overnight low around -13°F. Tuesday will remain frigid, with sunny skies but a high near 0°F. Wind chills during this period may make it feel even colder, posing risks for frostbite and hypothermia with prolonged exposure.

Residents are advised to take precautions for the bitter cold by bundling up, limiting time outdoors, and preparing homes and vehicles for freezing temperatures. Anyone near waterways should stay clear of unstable ice. The National Weather Service warns that while ice conditions will improve next week, they will not be safe over the weekend.

Stay informed by monitoring local weather updates and following safety guidance from officials. Prioritize safety during this dangerous weather transition.
