Milwaukee, WI – Southeastern Wisconsin is bracing for a sharp drop in temperatures as an arctic front moves in on Wednesday, bringing snow and subzero wind chills. Meteorologists warn residents to prepare for bitterly cold conditions lasting through Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, light snow will develop Wednesday afternoon as temperatures plummet from a daytime high near 27 degrees to an overnight low of 4 degrees. Wind chills could dip as low as -20 degrees, driven by brisk west-northwest winds gusting up to 30 mph. These conditions could make travel hazardous, especially on untreated roads.
Drivers are urged to exercise caution, particularly along major routes like Interstate 94 and Highway 41, where slick conditions could develop. Pedestrians are also advised to dress in layers and limit outdoor exposure to prevent frostbite during wind chills expected between -10 and -20 degrees.
Thursday will see some relief from the winds, though frigid air remains. The high is forecast at just 15 degrees, with wind chills still in the single digits. Looking ahead, another storm system could bring a mix of rain and snow by Friday night, potentially disrupting weekend plans.
Residents should monitor forecasts and prepare for fluctuating road conditions and extreme cold. The Milwaukee Office of Emergency Management recommends keeping an emergency kit in vehicles and checking on vulnerable neighbors during the cold snap.
