Wisconsin Dells, WI – One man is dead and another remains missing after a boating incident on the Wisconsin River, as authorities intensify search efforts Thursday.
According to the Wisconsin Dells Police Department, Luis F. Di Filippo, 75, of Chicago, IL, was recovered from the river Wednesday. His grandson, Francesco L. Di Filippo, 20, also of Chicago, remains missing. Both were involved in a boating outing earlier this week.
The Kilbourn Dam’s discharge rate was measured at 25,000 cubic feet per second Thursday—nearly triple the river’s average flow—prompting officials to suspend underwater searches Wednesday due to safety concerns. Typical flow averages about 9,000 CFS, but recent rainfall and snowmelt have drastically increased current speeds.
The Wisconsin DNR has deployed boats and drones to continue shoreline and aerial searches. Underwater searches will resume once conditions stabilize. Foot searches are also ongoing.
Officials caution the public to avoid anchoring or swimming in the river due to high flow risks. Life jackets are strongly recommended.
Anyone with information or suspicious sightings is urged to contact the Wisconsin Dells Police Department at 608-253-1611 (Press “2” for dispatch). Authorities extend condolences to the Di Filippo family as recovery efforts continue.
