East Moline, IL – Troopers are seeking public help after discovering roofing nails hidden in plastic Easter eggs across multiple crossovers along Interstate 80 early Saturday morning.

According to the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation (ISP DCI) Zone 2, the nails were first found around 1:45 a.m. April 5, 2025, between Geneseo and Atkinson. Troopers from ISP Troop 2 began inspecting additional crossover areas and uncovered more roofing nails placed in similar containers.

Officials say the nails, likely placed to damage vehicles, were hidden in plastic Easter eggs and deposited across multiple crossovers. The investigation expanded across other sections of I-80, including routes west toward the Iowa border and areas monitored by ISP Troop 3.

State police urge drivers to remain vigilant, especially near crossover zones. Anyone with information, dashcam footage, or who witnessed suspicious activity near these locations is encouraged to call ISP DCI Zone 2 Special Agent Nicholas Rubino at 309-752-4915 ext. 4931.

Residents and motorists are advised to report debris and avoid crossover zones until cleared.
