Wisconsin – Cold air burns the lungs this morning as wind rattles bare branches along the Mississippi River. Snow crunches sharply underfoot. Exposed skin tightens fast, and metal surfaces sting to the touch across western Wisconsin.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, an Extreme Cold Warning is in effect from midnight through Friday noon, followed by an Extreme Cold Watch into Saturday morning. Wind chills may plunge between 35 and 45 below zero. Frostbite can occur in as little as ten minutes.

The cold impacts a wide stretch of the region, including La Crosse, Monroe, Vernon, Crawford, and Grant counties. Portions of southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa face similar risks. Actual temperatures remain well below zero, while light winds still drive life-threatening chill values.

Travel conditions may look quiet, but danger builds quickly. Vehicles struggle to start. Tires stiffen. Any snowmelt from daytime sun refreezes fast, creating slick patches on bridges and untreated roads, including stretches of US-14, WI-35, and local county highways.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure, cover all skin, and wear insulated layers. Check on neighbors. Bring pets indoors. Keep phones charged and fuel tanks above half. If travel is unavoidable, carry blankets and emergency supplies.

Cold lingers into Saturday before easing slightly Sunday. Snow chances remain low, but the cold alone poses serious risk. More advisories could be issued if wind speeds increase or temperatures fall further.
