Kenosha County, WI – A sweeping federal indictment has been issued against 23 individuals allegedly connected to an extensive car theft and money laundering operation spanning multiple states.
The investigation, spearheaded by the Kenosha County Drug Operations Group (KDOG), began in 2022 with the discovery of an abandoned license plate on a rural highway in Kenosha County. According to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office, that single piece of evidence eventually unraveled a sophisticated criminal ring tied to stolen high-end vehicles, fraudulent LLCs, and illegal drug trafficking.
Authorities say search warrants executed across Wisconsin and Illinois—including in Milwaukee, Sun Prairie, Madison, Racine, La Crosse, and Chicago—helped identify the suspects. Among those charged are Diaunte Shields, Casha Griffin, Brianna Shields, Lashawn Davis Jr., and Meliek McClarn.
According to Lt. Daniel Ruth, public information officer for the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office, the ring allegedly used scanning and cloning tools to steal vehicles from homes and Milwaukee’s Mitchell Airport. VIN plates and radios were swapped to mask the origin of the cars, which were then sold at reduced prices in states as far as Nevada, Florida, and Georgia.
Officials say the group funneled the proceeds into fraudulent LLCs and used the money to buy and resell real estate. During the investigation, detectives also recovered four stolen vehicles, a stolen firearm from Detroit, counterfeit titles and VIN plates, credit card cloning equipment, stolen luxury goods, and substantial cash sums.
Investigators additionally linked the operation to a drug trafficking connection in Whitestown, Indiana, involving heroin and methamphetamine distribution.
The investigation received support from the FBI, NICB, IRS-CI, and multiple law enforcement agencies across Wisconsin and Illinois.
Sheriff David Zoerner called the outcome “truly impressive,” crediting KDOG detectives with uncovering the breadth of the alleged operation.
