Monroe, WI – A special weather statement is in effect for southern Wisconsin until 6 p.m. Monday as gusty winds and dry conditions increase the risk of wildfires across multiple counties.
According to the Green County Sheriff’s Office, the most significant fire weather conditions are expected along and west of a line from Janesville to Green Lake. During the late morning and afternoon, humidity levels will drop to nearly 25 percent, while south winds will gust between 30 and 40 mph. These conditions create an elevated to near-critical fire risk, making it easy for fires to start and spread rapidly.
Authorities urge residents to exercise extreme caution while working outdoors with any potential ignition sources, including sparks or open flames. Officials strongly recommend postponing any planned open burning until weather conditions improve.
The affected areas include Marquette, Green Lake, Fond du Lac, Sauk, Columbia, Dodge, Washington, Iowa, Dane, Jefferson, Waukesha, Lafayette, Green, and Rock counties.
