La Crosse, WI – Residents in western Wisconsin should prepare for an extended cold spell as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast this weekend and into next week. Saturday’s high will barely reach 15 degrees, with wind chills making it feel as low as -8.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in La Crosse, temperatures are expected to dip into the single digits at night, with lows of 3 to 5 degrees. Wind gusts up to 21 mph could further intensify the chill, making outdoor exposure dangerous for prolonged periods.
Drivers should exercise caution, particularly on U.S. Route 53 and I-90, as dry but icy conditions are possible due to freezing temperatures. Residents are advised to check heating systems, insulate pipes, and limit outdoor activities.
The extended forecast shows little relief. Sunday’s high will only climb to 15 degrees under partly sunny skies, with nighttime lows of 4 degrees. Monday will offer slightly warmer conditions, with a high of 21 degrees and calmer winds, but the chill returns on Tuesday, with a high of just 17.
Local authorities urge people to check on vulnerable neighbors and take necessary precautions, such as wearing layers and keeping emergency kits in vehicles.
