Wilmington, NC – Residents and boaters along North Carolina’s southeastern coast should brace for gale-force winds and freezing temperatures tonight. A cold surge will bring dangerous gusts of up to 40 knots over the coastal waters, while inland areas will see lows dipping into the mid-20s.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, the gale warning applies to northeast South Carolina and southeast North Carolina coastal waters. Seas are expected to range between 3 to 6 feet, with conditions at Johnnie Mercers Pier expected to reach 1 to 3 feet. The warning is in effect through early Saturday morning.

Those planning to travel or be outdoors should dress warmly and remain cautious of strong winds, which could make driving hazardous. Boaters are advised to avoid heading out on the water until conditions improve.

Tonight’s forecast includes mostly clear skies, but northwest winds will reach 16 mph, with gusts climbing as high as 25 mph inland. Saturday will see sunny skies, but temperatures will remain chilly, with highs near 43 degrees and continued gusts up to 20 mph.

Looking ahead, Sunday brings slightly warmer conditions with highs in the low 50s, but rain is expected Sunday night into Monday. Monday’s high will reach 65 degrees, followed by another drop in temperatures by midweek.
