Binghamton, NY – A winter storm is sweeping through central New York, bringing snow, sleet, and freezing rain that will persist into the weekend. Roads, bridges, and overpasses are expected to become slick, creating hazardous travel conditions for commuters.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m. Thursday. Snow and sleet accumulations could reach up to 3 inches, with ice buildup nearing one-tenth of an inch. Wind gusts may reach 35 mph, increasing the risk of blowing snow and reduced visibility.
Thursday’s storm will taper off overnight, but another system is expected Saturday night into Sunday, potentially bringing heavier snowfall and more mixed precipitation. Drivers should use caution and allow extra travel time, particularly on Interstate 81 and Route 17.
Friday will bring partly sunny skies with a high near 30°F, offering a brief break from the wintry mix. However, snow is expected to return Saturday night, with 100% precipitation chances and potentially heavy accumulations.
Residents should monitor weather updates and check road conditions by calling 511 in New York or visiting 511PA.com in Pennsylvania.
