Philadelphia, PA – Drivers across the Philadelphia metro, northern New Jersey, and the Lehigh Valley are urged to use caution Tuesday as light snow and a brief period of freezing rain create hazardous travel conditions during the morning hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, light snow is ongoing early Tuesday, with the highest likelihood for accumulating snow north of Interstate 78, particularly in northwestern New Jersey, the Poconos, and the Lehigh Valley. Snowfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are expected in these areas, with isolated totals near 4 inches possible along and north of I-80, especially at higher elevations.
Forecasters warn that snow may change to freezing rain late this morning into early afternoon, particularly across the Poconos, northwest New Jersey, and the Lehigh Valley, potentially causing a light glaze of ice. While ice accumulations are expected to remain minor, even a thin glaze on top of snow could significantly worsen road conditions.
Probability maps from the National Weather Service show a moderate to high chance of snow accumulation north and west of the I-78 corridor, along with an elevated risk for ice, especially in higher terrain. Areas closer to and south of Philadelphia and coastal New Jersey are more likely to see lighter snow totals under 1 inch, with precipitation possibly ending as rain.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for parts of northern New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, and nearby areas through this afternoon. Roads and untreated surfaces may be slick during the Tuesday morning commute, before conditions gradually improve later in the day as precipitation tapers off.
Officials recommend delaying travel if possible, slowing down, and allowing extra time if heading out this morning—especially north of I-78. Drivers should remain alert for rapidly changing conditions.
