Quad Cities, IA-IL – A powerful winter storm is set to unleash thick ice and freezing rain across parts of Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri overnight, threatening treacherous roadways, widespread power outages, and hazardous travel conditions through Saturday morning.

The Winter Weather Advisory, issued by the National Weather Service, warns of significant ice accumulations of up to a quarter inch or more, combined with gusting winds of up to 30 mph. These conditions are expected to cripple infrastructure, with downed tree limbs and power lines likely in the hardest-hit areas. Freezing rain will begin around midnight, continuing into the early hours of Saturday before temperatures rise later in the day.

Residents in cities including Davenport, Dubuque, Burlington, and Macomb are urged to prepare for dangerous travel and the potential for prolonged outages. Winds and ice accumulation will create near-impossible roadway conditions, making travel extremely risky.

Drivers should avoid unnecessary travel, stay updated on road conditions through 511ia.org or GettingAroundIllinois.com, and prepare for power interruptions. The freezing rain is expected to transition as temperatures rise by late morning Saturday.
