Wausau, WI — A powerful winter storm is expected to bring heavy ice and snow to central and northern Wisconsin starting Saturday evening and lasting through Sunday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Marathon, Langlade, Lincoln, Oneida, Vilas, Florence, Forest, Menominee, Shawano, and both northern and southern portions of Marinette and Oconto Counties. The alert begins at 7 p.m. Saturday and continues until 7 p.m. Sunday.
Forecasters say up to 3 inches of snow may fall near the Michigan border, with widespread ice accumulations ranging from one-tenth to four-tenths of an inch. Areas like Wausau, Antigo, Rhinelander, and Crandon could face significant icing on trees and power lines.
Travel could become extremely difficult or impossible, especially on untreated roads. Ice buildup may cause tree limbs to snap and power lines to fail, leading to extended outages across impacted communities.
Residents are advised to prepare now by charging electronic devices, securing backup heat sources, and avoiding unnecessary travel during the storm window. Stay updated with local alerts at weather.gov/GreenBay.
Officials will continue to monitor storm development and release updates as the system approaches.
