La Crosse, WI — Heavy rain Friday and a sharp drop in temperatures Saturday could lead to icy conditions across central Wisconsin by early Sunday, prompting weather alerts across the state.

According to the National Weather Service La Crosse, rain will begin moving northeast from Iowa into Wisconsin late Thursday night and continue through Friday. Highs will reach the 70s in southern regions like La Crosse and Prairie du Chien, while central areas including Medford and Neillsville remain in the 50s. Storm chances increase through the day, with widespread rainfall expected north of I-94 Friday night.

Saturday’s temperatures will plummet to the 40s, with lows in the 20s by Sunday morning. This drop will cause a switch from rain to a wintry mix, primarily affecting central Wisconsin. The NWS warns of potential icing risks, especially overnight Saturday into Sunday.

Travel may become hazardous, particularly in counties between Madison and Wausau. Drivers are urged to monitor road conditions and delay travel during the transition period.

Residents should prepare now by checking heating systems, planning alternate travel routes, and staying updated on evolving forecasts. More impactful disruptions remain possible if freezing rain persists into early Monday.
