Duluth, MN – A volatile mix of freezing rain, snow, and thunderstorms will impact northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin through Sunday morning, bringing travel hazards and potential power outages to the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a first wave of wintry precipitation will begin late Thursday, March 27, and continue into Friday night, with a second round forecasted to arrive Saturday evening and linger into early Sunday, March 30. Accumulation of ice up to 0.25 inches and snowfall between 2 to 6 inches are expected in areas like Grand Marais, International Falls, and Ely.

The storm also brings the risk of isolated severe thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening, particularly across northwest Wisconsin. Hail up to 1 inch in diameter is the main threat with these storms.

Winter Storm Watches and Winter Weather Advisories are active across northern Minnesota counties, including Koochiching and northern St. Louis. Residents should monitor road conditions, especially in elevated areas and untreated surfaces, as icing could lead to hazardous driving.

Travelers and locals are advised to prepare for power disruptions and check for updates via weather.gov. Limit travel during peak storm hours and keep emergency supplies on hand in case of prolonged outages.
