Charleston, WV – A wintry blast is bringing accumulating snow and dangerously cold temperatures to West Virginia starting today, with impacts expected into next week. Travel conditions may deteriorate quickly on I-64, US-35, and secondary roads as snowfall combines with freezing temperatures.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through Friday morning, with 2-5 inches of snow likely in affected areas. Wind chills are expected to plummet into single digits and below zero by Sunday night, creating hazardous conditions for both travel and outdoor activities.
Saturday night into Sunday, additional snowfall may worsen roadways, especially in higher elevations. Residents should prepare for icy conditions, and those traveling should check updated road conditions and pack emergency supplies. The coldest air of the season is forecast to arrive Monday, with daytime highs struggling to exceed 15 degrees Fahrenheit and overnight lows falling into single digits or lower.
NWS urges residents to take precautions, including dressing in layers, ensuring homes are heated safely, and protecting outdoor pets and livestock. Power outages could occur due to icy conditions, so households are encouraged to charge devices and secure backup heat sources.
Looking ahead, light snow and bitter cold will persist into midweek, with a gradual warm-up expected by Thursday. However, subfreezing temperatures may still impact roads, schools, and businesses early in the week.
