Garrett County, MD – A powerful winter storm is set to impact Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia through Saturday morning, bringing heavy snow and strong winds. The National Weather Service forecasts 6 to 12 inches of snow, with up to 18 inches along the ridgetops. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph.

According to meteorologists, whiteout conditions are expected, with visibility dropping below 1/4 mile during peak snowfall. The heaviest snow will fall Thursday afternoon and again late Friday morning through Friday evening.

Officials warn of dangerous travel conditions and potential power outages caused by the high winds and heavy snow. Residents in Garrett County, MD, and parts of Western Highland County, VA, as well as Western Grant and Pendleton Counties in WV, are urged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

Emergency kits, including flashlights, food, and water, are recommended for anyone who must travel.
