Portland, OR – A significant winter storm is set to impact the South Washington Cascades beginning Monday afternoon, bringing heavy snowfall and strong winds to higher elevations.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Monday until 4 p.m. Tuesday for areas above 4,000 feet, including Mt. St. Helens, Larch Mountain, and Indian Heaven Wilderness. Expected snowfall totals range from 1 to 2 feet, with wind gusts reaching 50 mph.
Road conditions will likely become hazardous, especially on bridges and overpasses, with visibility dropping below one mile at times. Snowfall rates could reach 1 to 1.5 inches per hour, particularly overnight into Tuesday morning.
Travel is discouraged during peak storm conditions. Those who must travel should drive cautiously, allow extra time, and carry emergency supplies. If stranded, authorities urge drivers to stay inside their vehicles to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
