Union County, NM – A winter storm is set to bring heavy snow and freezing temperatures to New Mexico, beginning Friday night.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm will impact Raton Pass and surrounding areas from 11 p.m. Friday to 11 p.m. Saturday. Snowfall between 3 and 6 inches is forecast, with the heaviest accumulation expected at higher elevations like Johnson and Bartlett Mesas.

The storm will create hazardous travel conditions, especially on U.S. 87 between Clayton and Raton and the I-25 corridor through Raton Pass. Bitter cold temperatures will accompany the snow, increasing risks of frostbite and hypothermia for those outdoors. Residents are urged to dress in layers and avoid exposing skin to the frigid air.

Authorities recommend delaying travel until conditions improve. Drivers who must be on the road should reduce speed and exercise caution. For up-to-date road conditions, visit nmroads.com or dial 511.

Residents should prepare for the severe weather by securing emergency supplies, staying indoors, and checking on neighbors who may need assistance.
