Chicago, IL – Heavy lake effect snow and strong winds continue to blanket the Chicago metro area Monday morning, prompting a Winter Storm Warning that remains in effect until noon CST, according to the National Weather Service in Chicago.
The warning covers northern, central, and southern Cook County, as well as eastern Will County, including communities such as Chicago, Oak Lawn, Schaumburg, Calumet City, Orland Park, Evanston, and Peotone.
Forecasters warn that snow totals of 4 to 8 inches, with locally higher amounts near Lake Michigan, could cripple morning travel. Snowfall rates exceeding 2 inches per hour, combined with north winds gusting over 30 mph, are creating blowing snow and near-whiteout conditions in parts of the city and suburbs.
The National Weather Service advises residents to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve. Drivers who must be on the road are urged to slow down, allow extra distance, and keep emergency supplies—including blankets, food, and water—in their vehicles.
While the heaviest snow is expected to taper off by midday, lingering flurries and slick roads may continue through the afternoon, especially near the lakeshore.
