Marquette, MI – A late-season winter storm is set to impact Michigan’s Upper Peninsula beginning early Sunday and continuing into Monday, with two primary snow bands forecasted over the Keweenaw Peninsula and south-central UP.

According to the US National Weather Service in Marquette, snow will begin early Sunday with a wintry mix possible in the western UP. Heavier snowfall rates are expected Sunday night into Monday, especially along Lake Superior where lake-enhanced snow could add 2 to 4 inches by midday Monday. Total accumulations may exceed 6 inches in areas including Ironwood, Republic, and Munising.

Travel across the region, especially between Ironwood and Marquette, could become hazardous as snow intensifies Sunday night. Road conditions may deteriorate quickly, particularly along U.S. Highway 2 and M-28. Lake-effect snow could significantly reduce visibility and create slippery surfaces during the Monday morning commute.

Residents are advised to monitor weather updates and be prepared to adjust travel plans. This storm has the potential to disrupt school and work schedules due to difficult driving conditions.

Temperatures are expected to remain near freezing, increasing the likelihood of a rain-snow mix early on before transitioning to all snow. Motorists should carry emergency kits and allow extra travel time if driving through the affected areas.
