Albuquerque, NM – A winter storm warning remains in effect for northern New Mexico until midnight Saturday, with heavy snow and gusty winds expected to impact the region. The National Weather Service issued the warning at 7:46 PM MDT on Friday, April 18, detailing the severe weather conditions affecting the northern mountains, including the Tusas and Sangre de Cristo ranges, Johnson and Bartlett Mesas, and Raton Pass.

Snow accumulations are forecast to reach between 5 to 10 inches, with up to a foot possible at higher elevations. Winds could gust up to 35 mph, adding to the hazardous conditions. According to the National Weather Service, travel may become very difficult, especially in mountain passes where tire chains could be required.

The storm’s heavy, wet snow may also cause power outages as the weight of the snow affects trees and power lines. Travelers are advised to keep extra supplies such as flashlights, food, and water in their vehicles.
