Trinidad, CO – Snow continues to fall across the southern Colorado high country, prompting a Winter Storm Warning that remains in effect until 3 p.m. Saturday. The weather is affecting communities including Trinidad, Walsenburg, Rye, and Stonewall.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, the storm is impacting elevations both below and above 7,500 feet across the Southern Sangre de Cristo and Wet Mountains, as well as lower elevations in western Las Animas County and the Upper Huerfano River Basin. Residents in areas such as the Spanish Peaks, Cuchara, and Weston should expect an additional 1 to 2 inches of snow accumulation through the afternoon.
Drivers are advised to prepare for slick and potentially dangerous road conditions. The Colorado Department of Transportation recommends using caution, especially on winding mountain routes where visibility and traction may be reduced.
If travel is necessary, residents should carry an emergency kit with food, water, and a flashlight. For updated road conditions, call 511 or visit COtrip.org.
Snowfall is expected to taper off by late afternoon, with clearing conditions into Saturday evening. This late-season storm follows a drier-than-average March, catching many residents off guard with its sudden intensity.
