Albuquerque, NM – A widespread winter storm continues to affect northern and eastern New Mexico with heavy snow, strong winds, and hazardous driving conditions through 6 p.m. Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect across multiple regions, including the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Sandia and Manzano Mountains, and counties like Curry, Union, and Roosevelt. Additional snow accumulation of up to 5 inches is expected above 7,500 feet, while lower elevations may see 1 to 3 inches. Gusts could reach 50 mph in some areas.
Key travel routes like Interstate 40 and Interstate 25 are impacted by snowpacked roads, ice, and low visibility. Raton Pass and Glorieta Pass are especially dangerous due to blowing snow reducing visibility below one mile, with occasional whiteout conditions.
Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to carry emergency supplies including water, food, and a flashlight. Wind gusts could also lead to downed branches and brief power outages.
Travelers can monitor road conditions via NM Roads at nmroads.com or by dialing 511.
More updates are expected as conditions evolve.
