Marquette, MI – A strong winter storm is set to impact Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, bringing heavy snowfall and hazardous travel conditions. The storm will intensify late Thursday night and continue through Friday, with the heaviest snow expected in northern and eastern sections of the U.P.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Marquette, widespread moderate to heavy snow will develop overnight. Snow accumulations could reach 6-11 inches in some areas, with gusty winds creating blowing snow and reduced visibility. Lower amounts are expected in the interior west and south-central U.P., where rain may mix with snow.
In addition, the NWS in Gaylord reports a high probability of at least 6 inches of snow north of the Straits of Mackinac. The heaviest accumulations are expected in Sault Ste. Marie, Drummond Island, and Naubinway. Strong winds will lead to whiteout conditions and dangerous road conditions, especially for the Friday morning commute.
Drivers should prepare for hazardous travel, especially in areas north of M-32. The NWS advises monitoring forecasts and avoiding unnecessary travel during peak snowfall periods.
