Chicago, IL – A winter storm set to arrive Sunday could bring snow and hazardous driving conditions to central and southern Illinois, particularly near the I-55 corridor and Chicago metro. Meteorologists warn that lake effect snow may intensify late Sunday night, complicating commutes Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm will track further south than initially expected, with the greatest impacts likely south of a Pontiac-to-Rensselaer line. Snowfall could begin as early as Sunday afternoon, extending through Monday afternoon in areas affected by lake effect snow bands. Travel may become dangerous, especially along I-55 and other major roadways, with slippery conditions and reduced visibility expected.

Highs across the region will remain in the mid-20s, with wind chills making temperatures feel much colder. Overnight lows will plunge into the teens, and gusty winds up to 15 mph could worsen the cold and create blowing snow.

Residents are urged to monitor weather updates and prepare for potential delays. If traveling, ensure your vehicle is equipped for winter conditions and allow extra time for trips.

The outlook for the week remains frigid. By Tuesday, temperatures will remain in the 20s with partly sunny skies, offering little relief. Overnight lows through midweek could drop into the single digits in some areas.

Be sure to plan ahead for potential disruptions and stay off the roads during peak snowfall periods if possible.
