Blacksburg, VA – West Virginia is set to experience its first winter snowstorm of the season beginning Thursday evening. Accumulating snow is forecast across the Allegheny Mountains, with snowfall of 4 inches or more expected in higher elevations.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Blacksburg, this snow event is caused by a northwest flow pushing moisture into the region’s mountains. Areas southward into southwest Virginia and northwest North Carolina may also see snow. Lighter snowfall is likely in the Cumberland and Blue Ridge Mountains, while lower elevations may receive just flurries.

Specific forecasts predict up to 3 inches of snow in Lewisburg, WV, with a 69% chance of at least 1 inch of snow. Areas like Boone, NC, and Wytheville, VA, are expected to see lower totals with probabilities of more than 1 inch at 65% and 52%, respectively.

Residents are advised to monitor updated forecasts and prepare for potentially hazardous road conditions. Snowfall will likely begin Thursday evening and continue through Friday.

This marks a shift from unseasonably warm weather and signals winter’s arrival across the Appalachians.
