Pendleton, OR – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 PM PDT Thursday for the East Slopes of the Oregon Cascades, where heavy snowfall and strong winds are creating hazardous conditions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Pendleton, the affected areas, including Camp Sherman, Sunriver, La Pine, and Sisters, can expect an additional 4 to 8 inches of snow above elevations of 4,000 feet, especially along the Cascade crest. Winds are forecasted to gust up to 40 mph on exposed ridgelines, further reducing visibility.
The combination of heavy snowfall and gusty winds is expected to create low visibility and difficult driving conditions throughout the region. Mountain passes and higher-elevation roadways may become particularly dangerous due to snow accumulation and blowing snow. The NWS advises travelers to delay all non-essential travel, as road conditions could deteriorate rapidly.
Motorists who must travel should exercise extreme caution and carry a winter storm survival kit, including tire chains, booster cables, a flashlight, a shovel, blankets, and extra clothing. Additional supplies such as water and a first aid kit are also recommended in case of emergencies.
Residents are urged to report any downed power lines to their electric company and avoid contact with them. Power outages and falling trees are possible due to heavy snow and wind. Stay updated with local advisories and road conditions before heading out.
