Portland, OR – A powerful winter storm is bringing heavy snowfall and hazardous travel conditions to the Cascades of Oregon and southern Washington. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning, in effect until 11 PM PDT Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, the storm is expected to drop up to 15 inches of snow, with higher elevations above 5,000 feet potentially receiving up to 20 inches. Winds are also expected to gust up to 35 mph, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of snowdrifts.
The warning affects areas including Larch Mountain, Indian Heaven Wilderness, Santiam Junction, Waldo Lake, Mt. St. Helens, Breitenbush Springs, Timothy Lake, Tombstone Summit, McKenzie Pass, Willamette Pass, Government Camp, Bennett Pass, Santiam Pass, and Lost Lake.
The heaviest snowfall is anticipated through 11 AM Thursday, with conditions gradually improving afterward. Roads, particularly bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous.
Travelers are urged to postpone trips if possible and exercise extreme caution if travel is necessary. Those venturing into the backcountry are advised against recreation due to the high risk of getting stranded. In case of emergency, stranded drivers should keep their vehicles off to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
