Winnipeg, MB – A shoplifting arrest in central Winnipeg turned violent Monday evening when a suspect allegedly assaulted a police officer during transport, according to the Winnipeg Police Service.

According to police, the incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. Monday, December 30, 2025, in the 300 block of Portage Avenue. Members of the Foot Patrol Unit were conducting community engagement in the Central District when they were alerted to a man attempting to leave a store without paying for merchandise.

Police say the suspect was arrested without incident inside the store. However, after being placed in the back of a police cruiser, the man allegedly became aggressive, verbally threatening to harm one of the officers. Officers requested an additional unit to assist with transport.

While being secured in the vehicle, police say the suspect began to fight and allegedly kicked one of the officers in the head. The officer did not require medical attention at the time.

The suspect, identified as a 37-year-old man, was taken into custody and later charged with several offenses, including Assault Peace Officer, Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm, and Theft Under $5,000.

Police confirmed the man was detained following the incident and remains in custody.

The Winnipeg Police Service did not release further details about the suspect or the business involved. The investigation remains ongoing.

Incidents involving assaults on officers remain a concern for police, particularly during routine arrests that escalate unexpectedly. Authorities continue to remind the public that violence against emergency responders carries serious legal consequences.
