Winnipeg, MB – A man is in custody after police say he allegedly fired multiple gunshots in a residential neighborhood in Winnipeg’s Lord Selkirk Park area Tuesday afternoon, raising concern among nearby residents.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers responded shortly before 4:30 p.m. on April 25, 2026, to the area of Main Street and Euclid Avenue after reports of a man seen with a firearm. Members of the Tactical Support Team located the suspect standing in a yard along the 200 block of Austin Street and arrested him without incident.
Police say a loaded sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun was concealed on the suspect and seized as evidence.
Investigators allege the man had been walking through the neighborhood with a group before retrieving the firearm and firing two shots into the air. According to police, the suspect then concealed the weapon and continued walking toward Austin Street, where officers took him into custody.
Damion Wyatt Mallett, 23, has been charged with multiple offenses, including allegedly discharging a firearm in a reckless manner, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of a firearm while unauthorized. Additional charges include possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm and failure to comply with a release order.
Police have not reported any injuries related to the incident.
The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues. Authorities have not released further details about a potential motive.
