Wilmington, North Carolina – Much-above-normal temperatures are expected across southeastern North Carolina through early Sunday as a stalled front lifts northward, setting the stage for an unusually warm and humid January weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, daytime highs from Friday through Saturday are forecast to reach the low to mid-70s, with some locations potentially approaching record high temperatures. Conditions are expected to feel more like early spring than mid-winter, with increasing humidity and breezy conditions at times.
Friday is forecast to become mostly sunny, while Saturday will also feature mostly sunny skies with breezy winds. The unseasonable warmth is expected to persist into Saturday evening ahead of an approaching strong cold front.
Forecasters said the cold front will move through the region Saturday night into early Sunday, bringing widely scattered rain showers, particularly overnight. Rain coverage is expected to remain limited, and no severe weather was highlighted with this system.
By Sunday, showers are expected to end early, followed by clearing skies during the day. Despite sunshine, conditions will begin to cool as the front moves offshore. The most significant temperature change is expected Sunday night, when much colder air filters into the region.
Overnight lows by late Sunday night are forecast to drop into the mid to upper 20s, marking a sharp contrast from the warmth earlier in the weekend. Breezy conditions may continue, adding to the colder feel.
The National Weather Service noted that temperatures will be closer to or below seasonal averages early next week after the front passes. Residents are encouraged to enjoy the warm conditions while also preparing for the rapid return to winterlike temperatures.
Commuters, outdoor workers, and weekend travelers should monitor forecast updates, especially if planning activities late Saturday night when showers and shifting winds are expected.
