North Carolina – The air feels dry and still early, but by midday, a steady breeze will sweep across coastal neighborhoods, turning quiet conditions into a growing fire concern. Grasses and pine needles are already crisp underfoot, especially near US-17 and inland stretches toward Leland and Burgaw.
According to the National Weather Service, a Fire Danger Statement is in effect through this evening, with relative humidity dropping to 25% to 30% and southwest winds increasing to 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph. These conditions can allow fires to spread quickly, even from small sparks.
Across New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties, outdoor burning is strongly discouraged today. Residents should avoid using grills near dry vegetation and properly discard cigarettes. Winds can carry embers several yards, especially in open coastal areas.
Despite the fire risk, temperatures climb fast. Highs reach 82°F today, followed by a warmer push to 86°F Thursday and 87°F Friday. This stretch brings clear skies and dry roads, making travel easy—but it also continues drying out vegetation.
Changes arrive late Saturday. A 60% chance of showers develops after 8 p.m., with rain becoming more noticeable overnight. Roads could turn slick quickly, especially on bridges and coastal routes like US-74 and NC-133.
Sunday remains unsettled, with a 40% chance of showers and highs cooling to 78°F. While rain helps reduce fire danger, it may slow travel and outdoor plans.
