Crete, IL – A family of seven, including three young children, was displaced after a house fire broke out Sunday morning in the village of Crete, prompting a large multi-agency emergency response and a call for community aid.
According to the Crete Police Department, the fire occurred early Sunday and left four adults and three children temporarily homeless. No injuries have been reported, but the family is in need of immediate assistance. The American Red Cross and local fire crews are working to secure temporary housing and resources.
Emergency personnel from multiple departments—including Crete Township, University Park, South Chicago Heights, Steger, and Beecher—responded to the blaze, along with Crete Emergency Management Agency, according to a Facebook post from Mabas27. Photos show smoke and fire damage to the upper floor of the residence, with crews working to extinguish flames from the exterior.
In a public appeal, Crete Police are requesting donations to help the family recover. The department is asking for clothing in the following sizes: boys aged 6 and 7 wearing sizes 6-8 and 8-10, and a 2-year-old girl wearing sizes 2-4T. Toiletries, toys, and non-perishable food items are also needed. Donations can be dropped off at the Crete Police Department lobby, with items being delivered to the family Sunday evening.
The cause of the fire has not been released. Fire officials have not yet provided further information on the investigation.
