Crete, IL – A gas odor detected by a staff member prompted an evacuation at Crete Elementary School on Thursday morning. The incident occurred at 11:15 a.m., leading the school’s administration to immediately contact the Crete Fire Department.

Fire and ambulance services arrived on the scene, quickly initiating safety protocols. Staff members guided students out of the building, ensuring everyone used primary and secondary exits. They then confirmed that all occupants had evacuated and marked the drill’s start and end.

During the evacuation, no one was allowed to enter or exit the building. Authorities temporarily closed all entrances to ensure emergency responders had clear access. Students and staff were moved to designated areas away from the school for safety.

Students and staff will remain in these areas until the Crete Fire Department gives the all-clear. Parents are advised not to come to the school until then.
