Bismarck, ND – A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for much of southwest and south-central North Dakota on Monday due to strong winds and low humidity, significantly increasing wildfire risks. Officials warn that any fires that ignite could spread rapidly and become difficult to control.

According to the National Weather Service, high temperatures will reach the upper 50s to 60s across southern North Dakota. Afternoon humidity levels are expected to drop to as low as 20 percent. A strong cold front moving through the region Monday afternoon will shift winds to the northwest, bringing gusts up to 60 mph in some areas.

Counties affected by the watch include McKenzie, Sheridan, Wells, Foster, and other surrounding areas. Similar warnings have also been issued for southeastern North Dakota, where wind gusts could reach 65 mph, as well as parts of South Dakota and eastern Montana. The National Weather Service in Aberdeen, SD, has extended its Fire Weather Watch for central and northeast South Dakota, where winds could gust up to 50 mph with humidity as low as 19 percent.

Officials advise against outdoor burning and urge residents to remain vigilant. Fire departments are on high alert, and the public is encouraged to follow updates from local authorities and the National Weather Service.
