Wichita, Kan. – Thunderstorms moving across Kansas Thursday morning are dumping heavy rain and raising concerns for flash flooding in several communities. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads as storms continue through the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, scattered showers and storms are tracking east across the state, with the strongest cells producing heavy rainfall and localized flooding. The heaviest activity stretched from Salina through Hutchinson by mid-morning, while additional clusters moved near Wichita, Emporia, and Coffeyville.

Low-lying roads and underpasses in Sedgwick, Reno, and Butler counties are most at risk, with emergency officials reminding residents that even a few inches of water can sweep away a vehicle. Travelers along I-135 near Salina and I-35 south of Wichita should plan for ponding and slower commutes.

Communities including Pratt, Harper, and Winfield may see multiple rounds of storms today, increasing the chance of repeated downpours. Residents are encouraged to keep phones charged and avoid unnecessary travel in flood-prone areas.

Storm chances remain through Thursday evening, with the risk of additional advisories if heavy rain lingers.
