Wichita, Kansas – Drivers across central and eastern Kansas could face sudden downpours and lightning delays by Thursday evening as storm chances rapidly build after a stretch of warm, breezy conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storm activity will begin developing Thursday afternoon and intensify into the evening hours, with probabilities climbing to 55% in Wichita, 74% in Emporia, and as high as 85% in Chanute through early Friday morning. Areas east of I-35 face the highest risk for stronger storms capable of producing gusty winds and brief heavy rainfall.
Warm temperatures in the mid-70s to mid-80s will hold through Wednesday, keeping conditions dry but breezy statewide. By Thursday, instability increases, especially across southeast Kansas, where repeated rounds of storms could bring localized rainfall totals near a half-inch and reduced visibility under heavier cells.
Travel along I-35, I-70, and U.S. 400 may slow during peak evening hours Thursday as storms develop quickly. Residents should secure outdoor items, charge devices in case of isolated outages, and avoid driving through water-covered roads overnight.
Storm chances linger into Friday morning, mainly across southeast Kansas, before gradually tapering. Additional advisories may be issued as storm timing and intensity become clearer.
