Wichita, Kansas – Severe storms could rattle south-central Kansas this evening, bringing hail larger than two inches and wind gusts topping 70 mph. The greatest threat stretches from Great Bend to Wichita and southward into Coffeyville, with storms most likely to hit between 6 and 9 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, widely scattered but intense thunderstorms will begin developing late this afternoon, moving southeast through the night. Storm timing varies across the region, with activity reaching Salina and Great Bend as early as 4 p.m., then spreading into Wichita, Hutchinson, and Medicine Lodge by dinnertime. Areas like Coffeyville may not see impacts until after 9 p.m.

While not every location will experience storms, those that do could see severe damage from wind and hail. Residents are urged to monitor weather alerts closely and have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially if traveling this evening.

Major roadways including I-135, US-400, and US-54 could see rapid weather changes and poor driving conditions. Secure outdoor items, and prepare for power outages in storm-prone zones.

Scattered thunderstorms may continue overnight. Additional watches or warnings could be issued later tonight.
