Wichita, Kansas – Heat is building across Kansas, and by Thursday, August 14, residents from Wichita to Salina could face heat indices above 100°F. With no rain relief expected until late Sunday, outdoor plans and travel along I-35 and surrounding highways could be impacted by heat-related stress and visibility issues.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, patchy fog could return early Thursday morning along and east of the Flint Hills, especially before 9 a.m. Although severe storms aren’t expected Thursday, an isolated thunderstorm can’t be ruled out in the afternoon or early evening. Most locations will stay dry, but residents should monitor rapidly changing skies.

The bigger concern is prolonged heat. Afternoon highs will reach 92°F Thursday and climb to 96°F by Friday, with heat indices pushing 102°F across south-central Kansas. These conditions are expected daily through early next week. Take precautions: stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak hours, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

Looking ahead, the next chance for rain arrives Sunday night into Monday, with a slight 20% chance of showers and storms. Until then, dry and sunny weather dominates the forecast.

More advisories may be issued if heat risks escalate or if storm chances increase.
