Wheatfield, NY – A large barn fire in Wheatfield on Sunday night caused catastrophic damage and resulted in the loss of livestock, according to a newly released statement from the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office. The blaze broke out around 8:10 p.m. Sunday at a property on 3149 Lockport Road, prompting multiple emergency calls from nearby residents.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived to find several structures on the property already fully engulfed in flames. Fire companies from Shawnee, Bergholz, Sanborn, Wendleville, and the Niagara Falls Air Reserve all responded to the scene and were able to extinguish the blaze after extensive efforts.

Officials say the primary barn suffered “catastrophic damage” and has been deemed a total loss.

At the time of the fire, livestock were present in one of the affected buildings. Five cows were successfully rescued and moved from danger, but one cow died despite emergency attempts to save it.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Niagara County Fire Investigation Unit. No human injuries were reported.

Responders remained on scene late into the night to ensure hot spots were fully extinguished and to secure the property. Roads in the immediate area experienced temporary slowdowns as fire crews operated and equipment was moved in and out.

The Sheriff’s Office has not released additional details, but further updates are expected as investigators continue their work.

This marks one of the more significant structure fires in the Wheatfield area this month, with responders stressing the importance of quick reporting by neighbors in helping fire crews mobilize rapidly.
