Sherman, MI – Water levels on the Manistee River are climbing toward a critical threshold, and flooding could begin as early as Tuesday evening near the M-37 bridge, putting nearby access roads and riverbanks at risk within the next 36 hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a Flood Watch remains in effect for the Manistee River near Sherman from Tuesday evening through early Friday afternoon. River levels measured 13.7 feet as of 9:30 a.m. Monday and are expected to approach the 15.0-foot flood stage by Tuesday night, a rise of more than a foot in a short window.

At 15 feet, flooding begins along the left bank near the Wilderness Canoe Livery just downstream of M-37. Low-lying areas, access points, and nearby trails in Wexford County could become inundated, especially during peak overnight rises. Campgrounds and riverside properties should prepare for water encroachment.

Drivers along M-37 and surrounding rural routes should stay alert for water over roadways, particularly during early morning hours when visibility is limited. Residents are urged to secure outdoor equipment, monitor river updates, and avoid flooded areas.

Water levels will remain elevated through Friday afternoon, and additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
