Wyoming – Wind rips across open plains this morning, kicking up dust and rattling loose objects as conditions quickly turn dangerous for both travel and fire spread.

According to the National Weather Service, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with southwest winds of 25 to 40 mph and gusts up to 55 mph, with isolated gusts near 60 mph possible . Humidity levels will drop as low as 10 to 13 percent, creating critical fire weather conditions east of the Continental Divide.

Riverton, Casper, and areas along U.S. 26 and WY-789 will see the strongest impacts. Drivers should expect sudden crosswinds, especially on open stretches. High-profile vehicles like semis and RVs may struggle to maintain control. Secure loose outdoor items now and avoid any activity that could spark a fire.

At the same time, a very different threat unfolds in the mountains. Snow and strong winds are developing across Teton and Togwotee Passes, creating winter driving conditions by late morning. Expect slick roads and reduced visibility if traveling through higher elevations.

Temperatures reach near 67°F in Riverton today before a sharp shift begins. By Thursday night into Friday, rain changes to snow showers, with light accumulations possible and colder air settling in. This is where rapid temperature drops could create brief icy spots on bridges.

Saturday offers a break with sunshine near 57°F, but more unsettled weather returns Sunday into Monday. Rain and snow chances increase again, keeping travel conditions variable.
