La Crosse, Wisconsin – Residents across western Wisconsin should prepare for another round of potentially severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening after an early morning line of storms moves out of the area. The timing of the morning storms will play a key role in how intense the next round becomes, but forecasters warn that numerous severe storms remain possible later today.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, the primary severe weather window is expected between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. As the morning storms weaken and shift southeast, any earlier departure could allow the atmosphere to recover more quickly, increasing the potential for stronger storms later in the day.
The highest threat is centered across portions of southwest and central Wisconsin, including communities such as La Crosse, Black River Falls, Wisconsin Dells, Prairie du Chien, Viroqua, Tomah and Monroe, where an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe thunderstorms is in place. Areas farther west into southeast Minnesota, including Winona and Rochester, remain under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5), while portions of western Minnesota are in a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5).
The main hazards include damaging wind gusts and large hail, with isolated tornadoes also possible if storms become more organized. Anyone with outdoor plans should have a sturdy shelter identified in advance and be ready to move indoors immediately if warnings are issued.
Forecasters emphasize that the exact timing and intensity of the afternoon storms will depend on how quickly the morning activity exits the region. Continue monitoring updates throughout the day, as additional severe thunderstorm or tornado watches may be issued before storms redevelop.
