Pittsburgh, PA – Rain and snow are set to move into western Pennsylvania Saturday morning, creating slick roads and potential travel hazards throughout the day. Residents should prepare for rapidly changing weather as freezing temperatures return Sunday and into the coming week.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), precipitation will start near sunrise Saturday, with a brief period of snow before transitioning to rain south of I-80 by late morning. Light snow accumulations are possible in areas north of Pittsburgh, especially during the early hours. Untreated roads could become slippery, particularly during the morning commute, so drivers are urged to use caution.
As the system moves through, freezing temperatures will linger, with icy spots forming overnight Saturday into Sunday. Sunday’s forecast includes a return of snow showers and sharply colder air. Highs are expected to reach only the mid-20s, with wind chills making it feel much colder.
The NWS has issued an Extreme Cold Watch beginning Sunday night and lasting through Thursday. Wind chills could drop as low as -25 degrees during this period, posing a risk of frostbite and hypothermia. Residents should dress in layers, limit outdoor exposure, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
Looking ahead, temperatures will continue to drop significantly early next week, with lows nearing -10 degrees by Tuesday. Prepare now for the Arctic blast by insulating pipes, securing emergency supplies, and keeping pets indoors.
