Mercer County, PA – Drivers across northwestern Pennsylvania are facing rapidly deteriorating travel conditions this afternoon as a dangerous snow squall moves through the region, bringing near-zero visibility and blowing snow.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Snow Squall Warning was issued at 2:28 p.m. Saturday for parts of Mercer, Lawrence, Butler, and Venango counties, including areas near New Castle, Sharon, Hermitage, Franklin, Oil City, and Grove City. The warning remains in effect until 3:30 p.m.

Meteorologists say the snow squall was observed stretching from 15 miles northeast of Greenville to near Oakwood, moving east at approximately 25 mph. The system is producing intense bursts of snow, strong winds, and whiteout conditions, with wind gusts reaching 35 mph.

The NWS warns that visibility and road traction can be lost almost instantly, making travel extremely dangerous—especially on major roadways such as I-79, I-80, and U.S. Route 422.

There is no safe place on a highway when a snow squall hits,” the weather service said, urging drivers to slow down and avoid stopping on roadways. Officials recommend delaying travel if possible or safely exiting highways before the squall arrives.

Snow squalls differ from longer snowstorms in that they develop quickly and can catch drivers off guard, often leading to multi-vehicle crashes due to sudden whiteouts.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local alerts, check road conditions before traveling, and allow extra time for afternoon and early evening travel as the system moves east.
