Pittsburgh, PA – Residents across Western Pennsylvania woke up to a notable chill this Saturday morning, with many areas seeing temperatures drop into the upper 30s. The unseasonably cold start to the weekend is affecting cities from Pittsburgh to Punxsutawney and is expected to impact morning plans for anyone headed outdoors.
According to a recent alert from the US National Weather Service Pittsburgh, these chilly temperatures are widespread. Readings of 39 degrees were reported in Cranberry Township and Moraine State Park, while Punxsutawney registered 40 degrees and New Castle was at 41. The temperature in the immediate Pittsburgh area was 46 degrees, mirroring readings in nearby Latrobe and Connellsville.
The cold air mass is also affecting parts of West Virginia and Ohio, with areas like Morgantown, WV, and Shadyside, OH, reporting temperatures of 50 and 52 degrees, respectively. The drop in temperatures could pose a slight risk for early-morning travelers on elevated bridges and overpasses, which may be more susceptible to slippery conditions. Drivers should remain cautious and watch for any potential black ice, especially in more rural, shaded areas.
The good news is that this chill is temporary. The NWS indicates that while it’s a brisk start, temperatures are expected to rebound quickly. The region will see plenty of sunshine through the day, with highs reaching into the mid-70s by this afternoon, offering a classic late-summer feel.
Warnings for low temperatures will expire by late Saturday morning as the sun warms the region. No further alerts are expected at this time, but the public should always stay informed of rapidly changing weather conditions.
