Pittsburgh, Pa. – Heavy rain and strong thunderstorms could cause localized flash flooding and scattered wind damage across western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio this afternoon and evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Marginal Risk (Level 1) is in effect from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. today for both excessive rainfall and severe thunderstorms. Areas under this alert include Pittsburgh, New Castle, Youngstown, Canton, and Wheeling.
Communities across Allegheny, Beaver, Columbiana, and Mahoning counties may see downpours capable of producing quick ponding on roads, along with wind gusts that could down small branches or disrupt outdoor plans. The Weather Prediction Center notes at least a 5% chance of flash flooding within 25 miles of any point in the affected region.
Drivers should use caution during the evening commute and avoid low-lying roads where water may accumulate. Power outages are possible where stronger storms pass through, so residents should charge devices and secure outdoor items in advance.
More isolated storms may develop again later this week. For now, all watches remain in effect through 9 p.m.
